Tout en diffusant en Italie une connaissance plus fine de l’Islam – notamment du soufisme –, il chercha à offrir aux lecteurs une lecture renversée de l’actualité géopolitique méditerranéenne, prenant en compte le point de vue des peuples musulmans contre les puissances colonisatrices. Souvent cité, notamment par les spécialistes de René Guénon (directement lié à l’un des fondateurs, Ivan Aguéli), mais jamais analysé de façon exhaustive, Il Convito / al-Nādī offre un cas d’étude précieux pour l’étude des échanges intellectuels au sein de l’aire méditerranéenne. Notre étude voudrait précisément interroger les ambitions interculturelles de ce périodique du début du XXe siècle : non seulement en éclairant la vision particulière – flatteuse et très intellectualisée – qu’il donna de l’Islam (et plus spécifiquement du soufisme) à ses lecteurs européens, mais aussi en insistant sur le lien complexe entre érudition religieuse et action politique qu’il construisit au fil de ses pages. Car, parallèlement à son œuvre de divulgation adressée au public « profane », le journal rêva d’une alliance d’un nouveau genre entre l’« Occident » et les « peuples de l’Islam », faisant de l’Italie l’alliée naturelle des pays arabes : c’est cette utopie fusionnelle et cet idéal de « renaissance spirituelle » que nous souhaiterions interroger à travers l’analyse d’une sélection d’articles emblématiques. Launched in Cairo in 1904 by two Europeans – the Italian Enrico Insabato and the Swedish Ivan Aguéli –, Il Convito / al-Nādī is a singular newspaper in the history of the press of the Near East. Written half in Italian, half in Arabic – before being enriched, for a year and a half, with pages in Turkish osmanlı –, this bilingual periodical worked for the rapprochement of "East" and "West". While spreading in Italy a more refined knowledge of Islam – especially of Sufism –, it tried to offer a "reversed" reading of the Mediterranean geopolitics, adopting the point of view of Muslim peoples against the colonizing nations. Often cited, especially by scholars who study the work of René Guénon (directly related to one of the founders, Ivan Aguéli), but never analyzed in an exhaustive way, Il Convito / al-Nādī offers a valuable example of intellectual exchange within the Mediterranean area. Our paper would like to question the intercultural ambitions of this periodical: we will seek to analyze the particular vision – very intellectualized – that it gave of Islam (and more specifically of Sufism) to his European readers. We will also insist on the complex link between religious erudition and political action that it establishes over the course of his issues. This point seems to us to be crucial: in parallel to its work of divulgation addressed to the "profane" public, the journal dreamed of a new kind of alliance between the "West" and the "peoples of Islam", making Italy the natural ally of the Arab countries. Cette effervescence terminologique témoigne d’un contexte intellectuel nouveau, qui nous place dans une condition particulière : depuis l’urgence de notre présent – alors même que la culture savante est en train d’absorber, de métaboliser et de conceptualiser plus rigoureusement ce qui définissait initialement une posture relevant de la sous-culture contestataire – nous voici riches d’une nouvelle sensibilité nous permettant de saisir d’un œil neuf toute une tradition de récits témoignant de la catastrophe, ou la représentant artistiquement. As an epilogue, this paper discusses some forms of contemporary millenarianism. The fear of the present is approached through the neologisms which have multiplied in recent years in the French language (survivalism, collapse, collapsology...). This new context places us in a particular condition: the intellectual elites are absorbing, metabolizing and conceptualizing some ideas that originally belonged to the subculture and to political contestation.
