De la mythologie indo-iranienne à la légende salomonique, de l’eschatologie mazdéenne à l’imaginaire du pouvoir turco-mongol, cette scène n’a cessé d’être ré-écrite et illustrée jusqu’au XXIe siècle. Elle témoigne également de convergences esthétiques tout à fait singulières à travers la rencontre entre peinture persane, indienne et chinoise, puis occidentale, pour ne citer qu’elles. Nous nous placerons ainsi dans le sillage de la recherche actuelle qui tend à ne plus se limiter à la perspective indo-européaniste, mais à privilégier plutôt la dimension de zone d’échanges intenses que fut le plateau iranien de l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours. L’approche intermédiale et la prise en compte des transferts culturels conduisent à un élargissement du champ interprétatif dans lequel l’épisode avait été inscrit jusqu’à présent. The legend of the dragon-king Zahhak, taken from the great Persian epic written by Ferdowsi at the turn of the tenth and eleventh centuries AD, is a testimony of the role played by classical Persian literature, and later on by manuscript painting, as a crossroads of influences on the Asian continent. From Indo-Iranian mythology to the Solomonic legends, from Mazdean eschatology to the Turko-Mongol self-representations of power, this scene has been continuously rewritten and illustrated until the 21st century. It also testifies to quite singular aesthetic convergences through the encounter between Persian, Indian and Chinese painting, and later on, Western painting, to name but a few. This paper will follow the current research trend that no longer limits itself to the Indo-Europeanist perspective but rather acknowledges the intense exchanges that have taken place on the Iranian plateau since High Antiquity until today. S’inscrivant dans le socle des travaux pionniers de Dominique Boutet, Claude Roussel et François Suard sur le mélange des genres dans les chansons de geste, des plus anciennes à celles du XIVe siècle, ce volume témoigne de la richesse, de la complexité et de l’irréductibilité d’un genre injustement considéré comme monolithique par les tenants de l’école romantique. La variété des sujets abordés permet d’instaurer un dialogue autant inédit que fécond entre différentes facettes des littératures épiques européennes, en prose et en vers. Nous avons ainsi rassemblé dans cet ouvrage sept contributions de chercheurs français et internationaux qui, tout en provenant d’horizons différents, nourrissent une réflexion commune sur le rayonnement européen du genre épique, du Moyen Âge à nos jours. En constituant le fil conducteur du recueil, cette perspective à la fois synchronique et diachronique permet d’instaurer un dialogue entre des champs disciplinaires variés, comme la littérature et l’histoire médiévales, la romanistique et la germanistique, qui demeurent trop souvent cloisonnées dans leurs domaines respectifs. Fédérées autour des concepts de frontière et de transfert, ces études valorisent le dynamisme de l’épopée, dynamisme où cette dernière a trouvé les ferments de son propre renouvellement. This volume is a contribution to the field of scholarly literature on the Middle Ages, with a particular focus on epic production, its contemporary significance and later influence. Building on the pioneering work of Dominique Boutet, Claude Roussel and François Suard on the association and blending of various literary genres in the chansons de geste, from the earliest examples to the 14th century, this volume bears witness to the richness, complexity and specificity of a genre unjustly regarded as monolithic by the proponents of the Romantic school. The variety of subjects covered here enables us to establish an unprecedented and fruitful dialogue between different facets of European epic literature, both in prose and verse. In this volume, we have brought together seven contributions from French and international researchers who, while coming from different horizons, have contributed to a common reflection on the European influence of the epic genre, from the Middle Ages to the present day. This perspective, both synchronic and diachronic, forms the common thread running through this volume, and enables the formation of a dialogue between a variety of disciplinary fields, such as medieval literature and history, romanistics and germanistics, which all too often remain compartmentalized in their respective domains.
