On s’attache dans un premier temps à analyser les pratiques philologiques qui sous-tendent la conceptualisation de l’Asie centrale et de la Route de la soie depuis le XIXe siècle et aboutissent à la mise en comparaison de deux corpus textuels anciens, l’un chinois et l’autre gréco-latin, visant à reconstituer une histoire de la connaissance de l’autre. Puis on propose une approche critique des lectures référentielles de ces corpus, qui les réduisent au statut de sources et consistent en particulier à lire les ethnonymes et toponymes (les Seres des Romains, le Da Qin des Chinois notamment) comme les traces d’un savoir géographique pensé sur le modèle du savoir géographique contemporain. Enfin, on prend l’exemple de la poésie latine d’époque augustéenne pour étudier la manière dont se constitue un imaginaire poétique de la soie et des Sères, dont les significations pragmatiques sont largement découplées de leur valeur référentielle, et qui relève plutôt d’une altérité rêvée dont témoigne également la tradition textuelle chinoise. On cherche ainsi à montrer qu’une approche comparatiste des pratiques discursives anciennes peut nourrir à la fois l’étude des imaginaires croisés, et l’analyse de nos présupposés épistémologiques contemporains. This paper aims to question the heuristic validity of the ‘Silk Road’ concept when applied to the material exchanges and cross-cultural representations that indirectly linked the Roman and Chinese worlds at the beginning of the Common Era. The first part is an analysis the philological practices that have underpinned the conceptualisation of Central Asia and the Silk Road since the 19th century, resulting in parallel editions of two ancient textual corpora, a Chinese corpus and a Greco-Latin corpus, with the aim of reconstructing a history of knowledge about each ‘distant other’. The second part is dedicated to a critical approach to referential readings of these corpora, which deal with these texts only as sources and notably consist of reading ethnonyms and toponyms (such as the vocables Seres used by Romans or Da Qin by Chinese) as traces of a geographical knowledge designed after our contemporary model. Finally, the example of Latin poetry from the Augustan period allows us to study how a poetic imaginary of silk and the Seres unfolds in these texts, whose pragmatic meanings are quite distinct from their referential value, and which rather belongs to a ‘fantasied otherness’ that is also attested in the Chinese textual tradition. Elles portent, pour la plupart, sur des cas d'étude précis, ordonnés selon trois grandes orientations successives : les échanges intellectuels, les échanges littéraires et enfin les échanges artistiques. The issue aims to present a few examples of cultural exchanges practiced on what is known as the Silk Road, from Antiquity to the twentieth century, in order to show the central and fundamental role played by this means of communication in the field of knowledge and letters. In a transdisciplinary logic, the issue is crossing geographical, historical, (geo-)political, literary, cultural, linguistic approaches. The contributions are diverse as much by the cultural area they address (Japan, China, Persia, Egypt) as by the field in which they fall (literature, philosophy, linguistics, music, painting, history), and by the methodology adopted (areal approach or global approach).
