https://atlantide.pergola-publications.fr/index.php?id=2009 L’article propose un examen du parcours d’Arcade Hoange, de son nom chinois Huang Jialüe, Chinois converti à la religion chrétienne, ramené en France au début du XVIIIe siècle, passant de la prêtrise à laquelle on le destinait au travail scientifique dans lequel il s’engage, sous la direction de Jean-Paul Bignon, dans le domaine de la sinologie naissante : il devient en effet « interprète » du roi Louis XIV, c'est-à-dire responsable des livres chinois déposés à la Bibliothèque royale, mais il enseigne aussi la langue à deux « élèves » de l’Académie des inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Nicolas Fréret et Étienne Fourmont, et rédige un certain nombre d’écrits laissés inachevés en raison de sa mort prématurée, en 1716. La question posée est de savoir s’il a été, comme on le dit souvent, instrumentalisé — il s’agit alors de déterminer de quelle façon précise cette logique d’aliénation s’est opérée —, ou bien s’il décrit un parcours d’acculturation en s’adaptant à son nouvel environnement. The article aims at examining the life and works of Arcade Hoange, aka Huang Jialüe in Chinese, a Chinese a Christian convert brought back to France at the beginning of the 18th century, passing from the priesthood to which he was destined to a scientific work in which he is in involved, under the direction of Jean-Paul Bignon, in the field of nascent sinology: he indeed became an 'Interpreter' of King Louis XIV, that is to say responsible for the Chinese books deposited at the Royal Library in Paris, but he also taught two attendants of the Académie des Inscription et Belles-Lettres, Etienne Fourmont et Nicolas Fréret, and left some manuscripts before his premature death, in 1716. The question asked is whether he has been, as it is said, instrumentalized—it is then a question of determining in what precise way this logic of alienation operated—or whether he describes a path of acculturation by adapting to his new environment.
